An overview of Siem Reap and Cambodia tourism by Ree Hotel Siem Reap, one of the strategically located Siem Reap hotels near Angkor Wat.
Cambodia is known for its intense sunshine and mostly hot weather with a distinct rainy season. The average daytime temperature is 33ºC (91ºF), dropping to around 25ºC (77ºF) in the evenings. The peak of rainy season is from July till September, so be prepared for rain on a daily basis during this period.
The currency used in Cambodia is the Khmer Riel (KHR). Money changing services can be found not only at Siem Reap Airport, but also at many money exchange stalls around town and at various hotels. You can also access the automated teller machines (ATMs) located that accept most of the main credit cards such as Visa, MasterCard, JCB, and American Express. Most transactions can be done in USD albeit the change may also return in Riels, therefore it is advisable to have smaller-denominations bills, such as USD 1 and USD 5 for Remork (Automated rickshaw) and other small purchases.
Today, the majority of the Cambodian population is Buddhist with some of the population immigrated from China and Vietnam.
The official language of Cambodia is Khmer, but the English language and proficiency throughout Siem Reap is quite high due to the exposure to tourism and western culture.
Travelling Throughout Cambodia
Touring around Siem Reap by Remork is probably the most efficient and safest way to view the Angkor Archaeological Park, markets and surrounding countryside. Remork drivers can be arranged through the concierge and speak a high level of English to assist with any of your tour needs.
Taxis are another option and can be taken directly from the airport or arranged by our concierge team to take you sightseeing through the Angkor Archaeological park. People may prefer hiring a taxi for air conditioning and less exposure to the outside elements such as dust and dirt.
Bicycles are a great way to navigate through Siem Reap, you may enjoy a bike ride along the river or waking up early to ride your bike out to the magnificent Angkor Wat at sunrise. Siem Reap is a small town and a bicycle makes it easy to stop and visit all the little shops and sights around the downtown and French quarter.
If you would like to journey to a neighboring town or village from our hotel in Siem Reap, such as Battambang or a further journey to the capital city of Phnom Penh, we would recommend taking the Giant Ibis bus company. Please note that most roads in Cambodia are still not paved and that the bus rides can be quite bumpy. The capital city of Phnom Penh is 6 hours away by bus and the town of Battambang which has an old French quarter and picturesque countryside is 2 1/2 hours away.
